Insurance

There are a few reasons why I do not accept insurance. Please note the following reasons are a general response to most insurance procedures. (You may be entitled to reimbursement through your health insurance provider. Please see below for a list of questions when checking your mental health care benefits.)

1.

When insurance is used for counseling, the treatment has to be considered a medical necessity.  This means your counselor must give you a psychiatric diagnosis. This goes on your health record and could have repercussions for you later on in life.  Once you have begun counseling, your counseling sessions must be "justified"  (you must be "sick" enough)  in order for insurance to continue to pay for your sessions.
2.

Your confidentiality is at risk when using insurance. It may be necessary for your therapist to disclose anything and everything related to your case.  Several people receive and review your records. Information is often transmitted through the internet which is another confidentiality risk.  This information will then be stored on a computer system and be accessible by many individuals.  FBI and other law enforcement officials can access your insurance information at any time and could be used against you if a legal issue/problem develops.  If a minor is involved, this information could also be used negatively against them.  If they ever desire to apply for certain jobs or programs (ex. law enforcement or military) the information in their files could be used against them.
3.
Many people who come to see me are not mentally ill and should not have a diagnosis. They are simply struggling with life issues.

Counseling services may be covered by your employee benefit plan or health insurance provider. Check your coverage carefully by asking the following questions:

What are my mental health benefits?
Is approval required from my primary care physician?
How much does my insurance pay for an out-of-network provider?
What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
What is my deductible and has it been met?
How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?
